Design on the Rocks: A Luxury Basement Bar & Wine Cellar Designed for Entertaining

When these homeowners decided to transform their lower level into the ultimate entertaining destination, they turned once again to Kitchens by Kleweno. After designing the home’s kitchen several years earlier, Senior Kitchen Designer Cherie Brown was asked to reimagine an outdated basement bar into a one-of-a-kind entertaining space that would be as functional as it is unforgettable. The finished design was featured in Kansas City Homes & Style for its bold creativity, luxurious finishes, and exceptional craftsmanship.

A Space Designed Around Entertaining

Connected to the home’s media room, pool, and outdoor living area, the existing bar no longer met the homeowners’ needs for hosting family and friends. The goal was to create a larger, more functional space while making a dramatic design statement.

Rather than starting from scratch, Cherie used the home’s original curved bar as inspiration, expanding the concept into a sculptural centerpiece that flows throughout the room. Gentle curves, reflective surfaces, and custom details create movement from every angle, giving the space a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere.

Distinctive Details That Make a Statement

Every element was thoughtfully designed to create a memorable experience. The dramatic island features backlit sliced geodes that illuminate in a variety of colors, while the surrounding custom cabinetry is finished in a metallic black high-gloss lacquer comparable to the finish of a Steinway piano. Custom cabinetry was crafted by Neff Cabinetry, creating seamless curves and exceptional precision.

Above, an illuminated infinity mirror ceiling reflects the island below, adding visual depth and making the room feel even larger. Throughout the space, integrated appliances, concealed storage, and premium finishes ensure the bar functions as beautifully as it looks.

A Wine Cellar Worth Displaying

The adjacent climate-controlled wine cellar was designed to be part of the experience rather than hidden away. Glass walls provide unobstructed views into a collection capable of storing approximately 1,000 bottles, while illuminated geode features and custom metal cabinetry continue the design language established in the bar. The result is a wine room that serves as both functional storage and a striking architectural focal point.
